Importance of Medical Treatment After an Accident
One thing that people often do not realize is that it is important to get medical treatment immediately following any type of an accident. The reason for this is that the longer of a gap there is between the actual accident and the actual medical treatment, the more likely it is that the insurance company will argue that the injury is not actually related to the accident.
Consider the example of an accident where somebody is involved in a car accident and they go immediately to the hospital thereafter and incur $100,000 in medical expenses over the course of the following 5 days. In this scenario the insurance company will have little ability to weasel out of paying the claim because there will likely be no question that the medical care was related to the accident.
However, consider the scenario where somebody is involved in a car accident and tries to “tough it out” for the following 2 week subsequent to the accident and does not receive any medical care. Then, after struggling for 2 weeks, the person finally decides to see a doctor. In this scenario, it is entirely likely that the insurance company will try to claim that some of the medical care may not be related to the car accident at the issue, and they will therefore refuse to pay for the medical care.
This is why it is so important not to try and be a “tough man” or “tough woman.” Essentially, the insurance company may try to argue that other things may have happened with in that 2 week interval that they should not be responsible for paying for, such as the injured person taking on other activities that further aggravated in the currently existing injuries.
